Hardly "absurd"
Have you ever been to International Ascalon? It's the meeting place for nearly every purchase that occurs. It's not just people that are making money off of this game, it's entire companies . There exist, now, SWEATSHOPS in China of workers farming or power-leveling for mind-numbingly long hours. A little less extreme are Americans who voluntarily work 12-hour days and pull in six-figure salaries.
Sony made a smart move and subsidized all cash-for-in game-goods sales and receives a cut. I am very surprised that you were surprised that people make money off of this game. Have you seen what could be sold on ebay? A much, much smaller game I played, Kingdom of Loathing has a market on ebay: KOL on eBay
If anything, I surprised that ebay purchases aren't more popular.

people have been doing it since diablo 1, doesnt surprize me one bit, in fact, the guy whos selling the crystaline on ebay for over 400 bucks (when i checked 2 days ago) is an in-game friend of mine.
most of the non-gold (currency) sold on ebay comes from regular players who find a decent item and say to themselves "hmmm, i wonder how much this would sell for."
the way you can tell, is look at the quality of items sold on e-bay...generally either very very low (ive considered selling on ebay b4 to suppliment my income) or very, very high. the reason being that there are the newbs who find thier semi-decent war-axe, freak out, and try to make 10 bucks on ebay, and then there are the people who find a godly item and make a small fortune off some 43 year old loser living in his moms basement and working as a pizza delivery boy, spending 3 weeks worth of his income on a bit of coding...
its sad. in fact the ONLY thing that has thus far stopped me from selling on ebay is the fact that i utterly hate people who have to resort to unsrcupulous methods to succeed in a game; as if an item really made a difference. if you want this wealthy players opinion; if those people using ebay had had a brain they wouldnt spend real life money to obtain decent items, but rather resort to collector items which can be just as (if not more than) effective as golds. but thats not why they do it, they do it ebcause they thinkg if they buy that mediocre gold item for 39.95 they will develope a modicum of skill in a game that the rest of us worked hard to advance in...
sigh...
but i digress.
point being, as long as people are lazy and lacking of skill, ebay will have a market in the gaming world.

Actual sentence:
I don't believe this as I heard about this in some post about gold
Estimated to mean:
I don't believe this, which I'd heard about in some post relating to gold;
Except I think he's trying to convey some sort of incredibility relating to the concept having been in a post about gold.
In other words, I'm with you on this. That title was absolutely horrible; Trying to convey too many concepts at once, and failing miserably at it.
Anyway, on to the subject at hand-
Things are worth what people will pay. A diamond necklace, a plain brown rock, and 100,000 gold in a video game are worth nothing at all until somebody decides it has value, as hard to accept as that may be. Trends and hobbies come and go, and there's nothing to be amazed about. It's called life. All 3 of the above have few practical applications, yet at various points in time, people will place different premiums on each of them.

While I doubt you'll get caught, yes, it is a bannable offence.
Ebay shouldn't be running these auctions either, both buying and selling the items is against the contract that people agreed to when they downloaded the game.

There is a thread lurking on page -12323 someplace where this issue was beat to death 900 times.
I specifically recall how I posted about swagvault.com
Go there. See the offerings. See the art they use from DOZENS of mmo games. Notice that the work of art they are using is trademarks, copyrighted, sometimes even patented tech. Notice they have been doing this unapposed for YEARS. Notice that they are doing this for pretty much ANY online game that has an economy. Notice that anet says nothing.
Its not anet. It's ncsoft. They present to the public that what those companies do is just like ebaying, and its wrong, but they do absolutely NOTHING to curb it from being done by private firms, firms whose money is soley earned through the sale of those things. This means that the cottage industry of this is not bannable, because they are not filing complaints about these companies. They are, in fact, discouraging people to ebay because they know that if EVERYONE went to places like ige.com or swagvault.com, then the economies would be insanely worse off. People do not all think devious like that, so the ebayers are a certain write-off crowd for ncsoft. those that actually go to these sites and buy gold and whatnot are actually not as big as those that play normally. But these people are making MILLIONS per month.
So no, ncsoft is lying.
